Repeat…Repeat…Repeat
I recently heard a song on the radio and it must have been a live version of the song, because the band had the audience chiming in. A man sang, “God is good,” and they shouted out “all the time.” Then he sang, “All the time,” and the audience enthusiastically responded “God is good.” Most of us have heard that many times and this band must have sang it ten times! But what it made me think of was multiplication tables! Stay with me…I can explain!
When my kids were in grade school and learning multiplication, they would use flash cards to help them memorize all those numbers. Even as an adult, when I want to remember something, I find that saying it out loud so my ears hear it helps me memorize it. Over and over again, we’d practice, improving their speed of calculation and sheer memorization of facts. Repetition…the action of repeating something that has already been said or written…hmmm…like the bible?
Sometimes, as believers, we find ourselves down and out, maybe in a dark place or maybe feeling alone, mistreated, or just not right. Not diminishing the reality of serious situations, but MAYBE a lot of times, it’s simply because we haven’t memorized the facts!! The bible is full of references of God’s love for us, His protection and His presence around us. What if we had scripture flash cards and we practiced night and day to memorize those verses that remind us of God’s goodness, His faithfulness and all of His promises for us? What if we recited them over and over until they were ingrained deep in our brain, but more importantly, rooted deep in our heart? Maybe then, in the sign of trouble, we could quickly rebuke the negativity of the world with the undeniable truth of God’s word.
