What’s My Purpose?

Do you ever struggle with your purpose, trying to figure out what it even is? We look at others and it’s so clear that they have discovered their purpose and they are fulfilling it right before our very eyes, while we’re waiting for our burning-bush, Moses-moment to discover our own. I was handed my purpose almost thirty years ago, when Pastor Jerry was over Crosby Church. One night, our guest speaker, Ken Holloway, stopped mid-sermon, pointed directly at me and said, “I see you handing out hope to those who have no hope.” That was it…one tiny sentence and he went back to preaching. As a new believer, I had learned Romans 8:28 through a sing-along CD I played for my toddler son. “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” As a cancer survivor, I had struggled with how God could use something so awful for good. That night, I had my Moses moment.

I’ve spoken with Ken and he doesn’t even remember that happening and the only explanation I have for that is because what was meant for me was not meant for him, he was just the messenger. His small, seemingly insignificant, act of obedience changed my life forever. It didn’t happen overnight, but it led me to volunteering at MD Anderson, the largest cancer center in the world, spreading hope to patients going through chemo. It opened up an opportunity here on our church website to share uplifting messages and words of encouragement.

Each of us has a unique purpose and because of that, we cannot ride on the coat tails of our fellow believers all the way to heaven. It is up to us to seek the will of God for our lives, revealing our purpose, through the Word of God, and relationship with the Father. Philippians 2:12 tells us to “…work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” This doesn’t mean you work to ‘earn’ your salvation, it simply means you should actively pursue spiritual growth and transformation. Vs. 13 (AMP) “For it is [not your strength, but it is] God who is effectively at work in you, both to will and to work [that is, strengthening, energizing, and creating in you the longing and the ability to fulfill your purpose] for His good pleasure.”

We all do share a common purpose and that is to glorify God. Collectively, when we are all striving to fulfil our purpose, we fulfil His.
